OATI Provides a Glimpse at the Future of Distribution Operations

Open Access Technology International, Inc. (OATI) introduces a new Distribution System Operator construct that links the wholesale and retail energy markets.

Minneapolis, Minnesota: June 12, 2014 — Public Utilities Fortnightly magazine recently published an OATI paper titled “From ISO to DSO” in its June 2014 edition. Chosen for its timeliness and forward-thinking approach, the OATI paper fits Public Utilities Fortnightly magazine’s trend of providing unequaled industry perspective.

Authored by Dr. Sasan Mokhtari, President and CEO of OATI, and Dr. Farrokh Rahimi, Vice President of Market Design and Consulting at OATI, the paper examines how the electric industry is undergoing a paradigm shift due to a combination of factors, including emphasis on increased use of renewable resources both at bulk power and distributed levels, new technologies, increased demand-side participation, and increased emphasis on grid resiliency.

As described in the paper, the new Distribution System Operator (DSO) construct links the wholesale and retail market agents, while maintaining the traditional role of a custodian for distribution system reliability with increased responsibility for managing distributed generation, storage, and Demand Response (DR) resources under a retail market framework.

The OATI patent-pending DSO process facilitates the interactions with both bulk system operators and demand-side asset operators.

“OATI will continue to push the boundaries and guide the industry to better adapt and overcome any potential obstacles,” said Dr. Mokhtari. “The new DSO construct, as laid out by our paper, provides a blueprint to meet the challenges of an evolving energy landscape.”
