OATI Provides Blueprint for Effective Use of Demand Response and Distributed Energy Resources

Open Access Technology International, Inc. (OATI) released a detailed Solution Brief on ways Demand Response improves grid reliability and a utility’s economics.

Minneapolis, Minnesota: July 14, 2014 — Increasingly, the grid of the future is going to rely on renewable resources such as wind and solar power. To adapt to these changes, utilities will need to look at Demand Response (DR), energy storage and other Distributed Energy Resources (DER) to help optimize their power supply management, as well as grid reliability targets.

OATI has released a comprehensive Solution Brief, titled “Virtual Power. Tangible Results.”, which analyzes the growing challenge of demand and variability. The report addresses where the problems lie and how the latest technological advances in Smart Grid applications can overcome operational difficulties and help utilities manage the ongoing energy paradigm shift.

The new OATI Solution Brief further examines how Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), each with their own profile based on weather and operating history, can be created from end-use assets, using a variety of aggregation methods — including distribution grid location, program type, and resource capability. VPPs can then be used to provision Flexibility Reserves and Ancillary Services to better manage the variability of a utility’s growing renewable energy portfolio.

“OATI is building on our promise to stay at the forefront of the energy curve,” said Sasan Mokhtari, Ph.D., President and CEO of OATI. “This Solution Brief explains how advanced Smart Grid technologies are helping create a resilient power distribution system that effectively leverages end-use grid assets and will improve grid reliability for years to come.”
