OATI Presents at GridWise® Architecture Council Workshop on Transactive Energy

Open Access Technology International, Inc. (OATI) examines new framework for the balance of supply and demand across electrical infrastructure using operational parameters.

Minneapolis, MN: December 12, 2013 – The high penetration of variable generation in the West, driven by Renewable Portfolio Standards mandates, is necessitating new scheduling practices to support the ramping and flexibility needed to maintain power system’s supply and demand balance at all times.

As an invited speaker at the GridWise® Architecture Council (GWAC) hosted workshop on Transactive Energy in Westminster, California on December 10-11, 2013, OATI discussed a uniform model for application of transactive techniques.
Dr. Farrokh Rahimi and Dr. Ali Ipakchi, who have more than 70 years of combined experience in power systems and electric utility operations, outlined the business and technical requirements for end-to-end integration of resources for supply of balancing energy. They also presented a new set of transactions and a supporting framework to close the existing gaps for utilization of demand-side resources by Balancing Authorities and Power System Operators for balancing purposes.

“The OATI framework will be suited for bilateral operations between consumers, aggregators, energy traders, and system operators,” said Dr. Ali Ipakchi, Vice President of Smart Grid and Green Power at OATI. “The transactions will support real-time scheduling of ramping and flexibility reserves for balancing variable generation.”

In addition, OATI assessed the requirements for system balancing when faced with high levels of variable generation, and explained the transactions required to support operations from retail sources and demand-response to the centralized Energy Imbalance Market (EIM).

“The OATI model covers the entire market lifecycle,” said Dr. Farrokh Rahimi, Vice President of Market Design and Consulting at OATI. “From registration to settlements, with special emphasis on price signals and automated operations, economic and control mechanisms are in place to meet future energy demands.”

OATI provides innovative software solutions that simplify, streamline, and empower the operational tasks required in today’s energy commerce and Smart Grid.
