Integrating Demand-Side Assets Can Improve Grid Reliability According to New OATI Report

Open Access Technology International, Inc. (OATI) releases special report explaining how utilities can realize reliability and economic benefits from connecting demand-side resources through to bulk power markets.

Minneapolis, Minnesota: January 15, 2015 — Increase in variable generation resources, such as wind and solar power, as part of North American energy portfolios, along with the retirement of older traditional generation resources, is dramatically changing the traditional utility business model. Because of the increased variability of renewable generation, Balancing Area (BA) and distribution grid operators are faced with the need for increased flexibility and reliability margins for real-time balancing of supply and demand. To address the dynamic nature of supply and demand, utilities are turning to new products and services as well as networked communications and smart technologies that will integrate distributed resources and retail markets with bulk power operations and wholesale markets.

In a new report titled Mind the Gaps: Bridging the Seams Between Retail and Bulk Power Operations, Smart Grid experts from OATI argue that Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and Demand Response (DR) can be used by emerging Distribution System Operators to supply real-time energy, conventional ancillary services, as well as the emerging flexibility reserves.

The new report explains how new networked communications and Smart Grid technologies will allow utilities to use their demand-side assets to not just improve reliability, but drive revenue.
