Grid Transformation Stories

Utilities around the world are grappling with seismic shifts in how society generates, distributes, and consumes electricity. The most innovative among them, both large and small, are diving head-first into grid modernization, not only to adapt but to fortify their systems. These are their stories.

Smart, Dynamic, and Innovative

The transformation to a “smart” utility begins and ends with visibility: situational awareness is paramount for maintaining power system reliability and providing high-quality customer service. Dairyland Power Cooperative adopted OATI webSmartEnergy® DERMS to enable broad system flexibility and wholesale market participation. Additionally, Dairyland Power used webSmartEnergy DERMS in conjunction with OATI’s IoTSCADA Gateway to achieve dispatch capability of a battery energy storage system, allowing the battery energy storage system to be managed for new strategic objectives and access previously inaccessible value streams.

Resilience Reimagined

Resilience doesn’t come in a one-size-fits-all package. It’s a destination that requires a tailored approach based on individual goals. OATI’s GridMind® MicroGrid controls are enabling Renewable Energy Partners to establish a community resilience hub for Minneapolis Public Schools featuring a total of 1,250 kW of solar power and 2,000 kWs of energy storage across four public school buildings. During normal operations, the microgrid will lower energy costs for the school district. As the market’s most bankable solution, OATI GridMind Microgrid dispels the narrative that resilience is out of reach.

Grid Modernization for All

Small communities are often priced out of the latest and greatest technologies, especially when it comes to the power grid. In Illinois, the cities of Flora, Metropolis, and Breese launched their grid modernization journey by adopting AMIoT, OATI’s IoT based AMI solution, for a modern, easy to install network of devices that utilizes open standards. As a result, these communities have eliminated truck rolls, gained situational awareness during outages, and established a network capable of supporting a multitude of smart cities applications in the future with no additional network investment.
