Speed to Power through Accelerated Reconductoring and other Key Advanced Transmission Technology Upgrades (SPARK)
Join OATI to unlock grid capacity, boost revenue, and modernize U.S. bulk power management by supporting our Department of Energy SPARK application.
The United States has more transmission capacity than its grid commercially delivers. The tools that determine available transfer capability—processing over 95% of all bulk power reservations—rely on conservative assumptions, static ratings, and decades-old coordination processes.
OATI has been encouraged by the Department of Energy to submit a full application to the address this issue through digital enhancements to existing infrastructure.
OATI is partnering with transmission owners and service providers across the U.S. to increase transmission capacity by 10-15% though deployment of the following integrated capabilities:
- Automated inter-regional coordination – replacing existing constraint exchanges with near-real-time updates
- Enhanced transmission availability assessment – incorporating software-based Dynamic Line Ratings and flexible demand-side resources combined with artificial intelligence trend analysis; and
- Expanded redispatch integration for constraint management
Expected benefits from participating include:
- 10-15% capacity increase
- 5% congestion reduction
- ~5% revenue increase from transmission revenues and generation transfer capabilities
- Cost-savings for OATI software enhancements with upfront fees covered by the grant
- Optional: 50% labor hour compensation, to a set total, from the grant
