“The Match of the Century”

On this day in 1972, Bobby Fischer defeated Boris Spassky to become the eleventh World Chess Champion in what was dubbed “The Match of the Century.” Soviet players, including Spassky, had dominated the game for decades, while no American had won the title in the 20th century. Their match garnered more interest and media coverage than any other chess championship before or since.
