Roberto Clemente Day

Sep 15, 2022
Today, baseball commemorates the life and legacy of the Great One. Roberto Clemente was a right fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955-1972. In addition to his outstanding career, his accolades including 2 World Series titles and 12 consecutive Golden Glove Awards, Clemente was a trailblazer for Latino and Caribbean players in MLB. His life was tragically cut short when his plane crashed while delivering aid packages to victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua. Each MLB team today will nominate a player for the Roberto Clemente Award, which honors a player who “best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team.”
