Christa Corrigan McAuliffe was born on this day in 1948. A social studies teacher from Concord, New Hampshire, McAuliffe was chosen from more than 11,000 applicants to be the first civilian to fly to space as part of NASA’s Teacher in Space Project. She and her crew members died in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. Around 40 schools around the world have been after her.
