Managing the Rise of Renewable Energy in Mexico with OATI’s DERMS Solution

Striving to utilize clean energy and minimize costs, Mexico has created some of the biggest renewable energy projects in Latin America. Among these are the Villanueva solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Coahuila, comprised of 2.3 million solar panels, and the Energia Eolica del Sur wind park in Oaxaca, which aims to eliminate 567,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually. According to Phys.org, Mexico could implement several more wind and solar parks within the next two years.

Last month, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) released their Renewable Power Generation Costs in 2018 report, which found that the global weighted-average cost of electricity from solar PV and onshore wind power decreased by 13 percent last year. As renewable power generation costs continue to fall, solar PV and onshore wind power are expected to be more cost-effective than fossil-fuels, according to the report.

With more clean energy projects announced every year and a projected reduction in renewable energy costs, entities in Mexico must be able to effectively maintain and manage distributed and renewable generation. OATI’s Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) solution allows entities to boost grid reliability, prevent circuit overloads, manage energy supply and load, and more — ultimately improving cost-savings and customer service.

To take advantage of the variety of renewable energy resources, while improving resiliency, entities may choose to self-generate power by implementing a microgrid. To enhance reliability and save money, these entities require an easily configurable microgrid energy management system, like OATI GridMind™, designed to prioritize energy load and optimize microgrid operations.
